Quest for Fossils

Quest for Fossils

Tires slipping across wet stones
Dirt spitting, engine roaring
A sudden leap forward
Traction again, gripping like sandpaper.

Steep slopes giving way
Another jolt forward
My heart races
Thoughts flood my mind.

Will the tires grip like claws
Will the mountain give us calm
The treasures await us
All the risks are worthwhile.

To reach the summit takes courage
To reach the summit means reward
Fossils abound, wet stones cold,
Wiping away the mud reveals the past.

The treasures brought home
I'll examine with care
Amazing that what I hold in my hand
Is part of my past present and future.

I look up to see the crest of the summit
Now a new excitement takes over
The hunt will now begin
But in a few hours my heart will race
Because down the mountain we'll go again.

Tall and Proud

Tall and Proud

A seed no more it grew tall and proud
The days, the months, the years go by
Not like the small wanted a crowd.
No, alone it stands majestic and high.

In spring the buds bloom telling
The same old story every year
In summer the leaves wave to me
Saying hello and good cheer.

The fall brings leaves of yellow and brown
They rustle in the wind saying goodbye
Though they sway to and fro to the ground
A new seed would like to touch the sky.

Winter brings a fresh blanket of snow
Sleeping patiently waiting so cold
The sun beams through ice cracks to show
An eager young tree, sprouting from below.

Mother of America

Mother of America

A step, a breathless drop
The earth rushes forward
Suddenly, wings span wide
A moment from the water
The eagle glides free.
Talons extended
A majestic image of freedom.

The protector of the meek
The Mother of America.
Standing proud at peace or at war
Soaring above all others

From coast to coast
The eagles reach seems endless
When in danger

She wraps her wings around her children
Protecting America for another day.

When in peace, she soars the skys,
Ever watchful, ever protective, ever loving.

This Place

This Place

There is a place on the farm

To get away from it all

This place has a certain charm

Open and free with no walls

Green rows that go on for miles

Topped with white flowers so high

A landscape so beautiful and wild

Yet not like the days gone by

Surrounding the field of green and white

A dirt road weaves and whines

Standing tall the fireweed is such a sight

A more perfect place is hard to find

The irrigation sprinklers spray the mist

The heat of the day shines down from above

The water beads on leaves its kissed

And moistens the ground that was tilled with love

Such a sunny day with puffy white clouds

A slight breeze sings through the leaves

Of trees that stand so tall and proud

And still so much more to see

With Pioneer Peak rising to the sky

What an incredible and glorious day

An eagle soars on wings so high

This place just takes your breath away!
